The Nevada Conservatory Theatre at UNLV opens its season Sept. 19 with Athol Fugard's "My Children! My Africa!" in the Black Box Theatre. Clarence Gilyard directs.

The great South African playwright confronts the tragedy of apartheid in his native land in this compelling tale about the efforts of a humble and humane black teacher in a segregated township to persuade just one young person that education, not violence, is the answer to South Africa's problems.

The cast includes Theresa Moriarty as Isabel; Maurice Palmer as Thami; and Stephon Pettway as Mr. M.

The production and design team includes scenic designer Roxy Mojica, lighting designer Elizabeth Kline, sound designer David Kolar, costume designer Cheyenne Hamburg, technical director Brian Smallwood, and production stage manager Adrienne Miranda.

Clarence Gilyard earned his bachelor's degree in theater arts from California State University, Dominguez Hills and his master of fine arts from Southern Methodist University. As an actor, director, and producer, Gilyard has worked in television and film for more than 25 years. After working 13 years straight as the costar of two successful television series -- Matlock and Walker, Texas Ranger -- he took a professional sabbatical and earned his MFA in theater performance. He now teaches acting and works professionally in television, film, and theater.
